This is to let you know that I am going to be out of country for almost a couple of weeks. I am going to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in the east Africa. So I may be in some area out of your reach by either internet or mobile phone during trekking though I will keep my mobile turned on at all times.

Hybrid Lotus on the way?

Lotus reportedly has something interesting up its corporate sleeves for an upcoming sports car project. Although nothing official has been announced, some media outlets are predicting that Lotus will offer a hybrid drivetrain on its next vehicle. The words of Lotus' head man Mike Kimberley support this notion when he says that the automaker wants to offer "guilt-free, high performance motoring." Like the recently released Evora, the upcoming sports car, which could be an Esprit revival, will likely use a Toyota-sourced V6 engine. In that case, it wouldn't be a stretch to consider that Lotus would also get Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology as well.

Considering the fact that Lotus is already hard at work on fuel-saving technology, if this rumor turns out to be true, it would fit right into the British company's new green image. Remember too that Lotus supplies much of the Tesla Roadster's underpinnings, so the marque surely has gained some EV knowledge along the way.

Ford Ka New Generation

We've been seeing spy shot after spy shot of Ford's upcoming second-generation Ka minicar, so it's nice to see it in production form via a leaked photo on the internet ahead of its official unveiling. While the original Ka has been around since 1996, the New Edge vehicle still commands good sales numbers in the U.K. due to its good fuel mileage and low cost. Therefore, Ford's got plenty riding on the new redesign, and the look follows the current Kinetic Euro design ethos used by Ford while still featuring some of the key Ka styling trademarks, such as the pronounced wheel arches.

We have high hopes that the Ka will make the jump from Euro-only model to the United States as part of Ford's current U.S. strategy of offering small cars in lieu of SUVs and trucks. After all, who wouldn't like to see a mild hybrid variant of the next-gen Ka that can achieve 60.3mpg (U.S.)? 헉! 25.49km/liter!  Plus, it's attained Sub Zero status on Top Gear's Cool Wall.

Fiat hikes 500 minica production

세계자동차 산업의 패러다임이 바뀌기 시작한지 오래다. 기름값 부담 때문에 소비자들이 찾는 자동차는 바로 연비가 더 좋은 차이다. 이제 기름을 적게 먹고 배출 가스를 적에 내뿜는 차... 이런차가 아니면 소비자의 쇼핑 리스트에 오르지도 못할 지경이다.

전통적으로 경차 시장이 발달한 유럽에서 갈고 닦은 유럽 메이커들은 상대적으로 경차 경쟁력에 우위를 점하고 있다. 이에 뒤질세라 일본 메이커의 경쟁차 개발도 가속을 더 하고 있는데...

TURIN -- Fiat has boosted production of its popular 500 minicar to more than 200,000 units annually in response to increasing European demand for fuel-efficient compacts.

"Capacity for the 500 is now over 200,000 units a year," Fiat group CEO Sergio Marchionne said last week in a conference call with analysts.

Fiat now plans to sell 195,000 units of the popular 500 during 2008. The Italian carmaker initially planned to sell 120,000 units this year. High demand for fuel-efficient small cars saw Fiat lift the target to 140,000 units earlier this year. Fiat booked 230,000 dealer orders for the 500 between the car's July 2007 introduction and the end of its June 2008 reporting period, the company said.

The company said it sold 94,000 units in the first half of 2008.

Market researcher Jato Dynamics said the Fiat 500 was the Europe's second best-selling minicar over the January to May period, with 76,533 units sold. The 500 was second to the Fiat Panda – the segment leader since 2004 – which sold 101,645 units in the first five months of the year, Jato said.

The Renault Twingo was the third best-selling minicar, with 59,855 sales over the January to May period.

Fiat launched the 500 in mid-July in India, where a 98 percent import duty has transformed the high-volume minicar into a premium model. A 1.3-liter, 75hp diesel 500 in India costs the equivalent of 22,500 euros, compared to 14,750 euros in Italy.

Pricing is expected to limit demand and volume for the 500 in India. "This is a lifestyle product. We expect to sell a few hundred cars in the next 12 months," said Rajeev Kapoor, CEO of Fiat India Automobiles.

Fiat India Automobiles is a joint venture between the Italian automotive group and India's Tata Motors.

Honda Jazz

혼다가 그동안 판매 호조를 보여온 Jazz를 대폭 개선한 신형 Jazz를 오는 10월에 출시한다는데, 1.2, 1.4-liter 두종류 엔진을 소개한다. 2009년 부터는 하이브리드 까지 할꺼라고....

Honda promises the all-new Jazz supermini will trump its predecessor in every area when it hits showrooms in October. And that’s some promise, as the current Jazz has proven consistently popular with owners – almost 161,000 in the UK – since it was launched in 2001, regularly featuring in the Auto Express Driver Power survey top ten.

As you can see, the look is evolutionary rather than groundbreaking, but the Japanese firm's latest urban runabout boasts even more passenger and storage space, thanks to being slightly longer and wider than the outgoing car.

But in a surprise move, there will be no diesel engines under the bonnet, as Honda believes the refinement, fuel economy and performance of its i-vtec petrol engines justify shunning an oil burner.

So, 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol units will power the new Jazz at launch, and a hybrid will come during 2009 promising tax-busting emissions fuel bills low enough to satisfy even the most credit crunched.

Set to be officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, prices for the Jazz will start at £10,000, rising to around £14,000 for a well-equipped 1.4-litre model.

Toyota 이태리에서 iQ 게릴라 마케팅

경차의 주요시장인 이태리에서 도요다가 앞으로 출시할 iQ minicar 게릴라 마케팅 캠페인을 시작했다. 주차된 차의 옆에 자석으로 백미러에 리프렛을 붙여놓고, 도요다는 iQ가 얼마나 작은 차인지를 강조한다. 전장이 2,980mm인 iQ는 유럽에서 2인승 이상의 차중에서 가장 짧은
차다. smart ForTwo는 30센티 미터가 짧지만 2인승이다.

도요다는 새로운 마케팅 전략이 환경 친화 이미지를 침해할 수도 있다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 그래서 모든 인쇄 용지는 재활용 종이를 사용하고 있다. 자석을 차에 봍인 소형차는 땅바닥에 버려진 것들을 회수한다. 이 캠페인은 8월초에 끝날 예정이며 유럽에서의 판매는 내년초에 시작할 예정이다.

In Europe, the iQ will be offered with a 1.4 liter diesel engine. If the model ever makes it over here, count on either the 1.0 or 1.3 liter gasoline engine underhood. If that does indeed happen, will we ever get tired of making ridiculous puns about the iQ and smart names? Nah.

내부를 훑어 보니 경차라는 생각이 들지 않을 만큼 많은 기능과 편의 정비를 갖추고 있다.

In other iQ news, Toyota is reportedly not planning on adding a hybrid option to the iQ, instead relying on a choice of two gas and one diesel-powered engine options. The reasoning behind not offering a hybrid relates again to the size of the vehicle. There's just no room to store a battery. Plus, the battery would add too much weight to the little car. Stop/start, though, is expected to make an appearance here.

Tesla gets good review at Bently


The Tesla Roadster electric sports car won't go on sale in Europe until the fall of 2009 (for a hefty price of about $160,000). But at least one early version has found its way across the Atlantic: Bentley, which specializes in heavyweight luxury cars, has one of the light electric runabouts.

The aluminum roadster, with 6,831 laptop batteries jammed into its rear section, has been tested by Bentley CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen and development chief Ulrich Eichhorn. Says Eichhorn: "Not as hot as a Lotus, but absolutely a great driving experience." Lotus delivers the Tesla chassis.

But don't look for an electric Bentley; the required batteries would be too heavy. And Bentleys would have to shrink.

Kilimanjaro 장도 기원 산행

오늘도 월요산행은 계속된다. 오는 31일 장도에 오르는 킬리만자로 트레킹을 위한 마지막 체력단련을 위한 산행인 셈이다. 지난 며칠 억수같이 퍼붓던 비는 오늘은 멎은 것인지 하늘은 약간 흐려도 괜찮아 보인다. "장맛비야 멈추어다오~."  지난번 상장능선 중주 산행 때 내가 고생하는 것을 보고 무리하지 말자고 그렇게 먹었는지 김양수 사장이 쉬운 코스로 가자고 한다. 원래는 백운대를 오르자고 제안했었지만 나도 그냥 따르기로 했다. 북한산 계곡을 타고 올라 중흥사지와 태고사를 지나 대남문을 향하는 코스를 타고 가다 실계곡을 건너 왼쪽으로 빠지는 대동문으로 행선지를 결정했다. 지난 23일에 아산병원에 가서 통증을 가라앉히는 주사를 맞은 터라 조심을 해야한다. 그런데 등산하는 동안 계속 허리가 불편한 게 여간 조심스럽지 않다. 장거리를 어떻게 할려고 그러는지. ㅜㅜ

Today's hiking was somewhat special one. It is going to be the last one before my Kilimanjaro trekking which is scheduled from July 31 through August 11th, and the guys intended to give a good wish for my expedition. Trekking in Kilimanjaro will actually begin on August 2 from Marangu gate, the entrance of Kilimajaro national park. The group will stay in the mountains for six nights and seven days while trekking. After trekking there will be relaxing for one day with safari in a national park in Tanzania. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

콸콸 흐르는 계곡물이 시원하다. 하산길에 느즈막히 아이들을 데리고 피서를 오는 사람들이 제법 많이 계곡을 찾고 있다. 계곡을 더럽히지 말아야 하는데...

몇년전부터 북한산성 복원 계획에 따라 허물어지고 낡은 북한산 돌성벽을 보수 해오고 있다. 그런데 복원된 성벽을 보면 제대로 고증을 기초로 복원하는 것인지 잘 모르겠다. 무너져 내린 원래의 돌을 쌓아 올리는 것이 아니고 새로 대충 돌질을 해서 만드는 성을 복원이라고 하기에는 낯이 뜨겁다. 문외한인 내가 봐도 이건 성벽이 아니다.
그러건 말건 이곳에 둥지를 틀고 사는 비둘기들은 한가롭게 오래만에 햇빛을 쫴며 졸고 있다.
아들녀석이 사준 등산용 계측기구; 도보수, 상행거리, 소모된 칼로리, 타이머등의 기능이 있으나  성능의 신뢰성이 의심스럽다. 옆사람의 계측과 차이가 너무 많이 나는 것이... 값도 싸지도 않던데. 하기사 설명서에 있는 기능을 다 정확하게 한다면 값이 싸다고 느껴지기는 했지만... 한번 더 써보구..

Lightning GT & Other Edlectric Vehicles Debut at BIMS

A number of new electric vehicles are making their debut at the British International Motor Show (23 July-3 August) in London, ranging from the high-performance UK-designed and built Lightning GT sports car to low-speed imports from China.

The Lightning GT (earlier post) uses a 35 kWh battery pack with 30 Altairnano large-format NanoSafe batteries and four 120 kW Hi-Pa Drive in-wheel motors from PML Flightlink Ltd. The car features full traction control and regenerative braking on all four wheels independently. The Lightening will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds when fully developed, and has a top speed of 130 mph.

Ford plans to cut truck mix to 38%

Ford Motor는 2007년에 북미에서 전차종 판매 판매물량의 절반이 넘은 트럭 비율을 2012년 까지는 38%로 낮출 계획이라고 한다. Ford의 pickup과 SUV는 전체 판매의 52%를 점했다. 한 임원은 2010년까지는 40%로 낮추고 2013년까지는 38%로 낮출 것으로 기대하고 있었다.
"2007년의 차종의 믹스는 확실히 현재 연료효율의 중요해짐에 따라서 시장이 변하고 있는 방향과 잘 못 맞춰져 있습니다." 라고 Ford의 글로벌 제품 개발 담당 부사장 데릭 쿠작이 말했다. 그는 오늘 기자들에게 Ford의 제품계획에 대하여 간략하게 말했다. Ford는 향후 수년내에 트럭의 생산을 줄이고 새로 개발하는 Subcompact와 Compact 승용파를 소개할 것이라고 말했다.

트럭 물량이 줄어듦에 따라 Ford는 2007년의 숭용차 판매비율 30%에서 2013년에는 38%로 늘어날 것이라고 했다. Crossover는 2007년의 18%에서 2012년에는 24%로 증가할 것으로 기대하고 있다.

시장상황에 따라서 수요에 따라서 제품계획을 발빠르게 수정하고 공장운영계획을 수정하는 이들의 융통성이 전에는 불 수 없었든 변화인 것 같은데.. 그러면 우리나라의 자동차 공장의 사정은 어떤가? 밤 낮 노조의 떼쓰기에 밀려 다니는 것이 안타깝기만 하다.

Electric Smart on its way for 2010



Smart currently has an electric version of its little ForTwo runabout... um, running about in Europe known as the Smart ed. Using a a sodium-nickel-chloride (commonly called a Zebra) battery, the 41 horse electric motor has plenty of power to move the vehicle around, and urban performance is actually said to be improved over the standard model. So far, the electric smart has only been for testing, but that looks to be changing rather soon. According to Dieter Zetsche, a fully electric ForTwo will be on sale to the public beginning in 2010.

We would expect the production model to be equipped with lithium batteries and have better range than the Zebra-equipped models currently on the roads. So far, no firm pricing information has been provided, though Dr. Z says he doesn't believe consumers would be willing to pay a large surcharge. The total cost of the smart ev would also depend on whether the automaker chooses to sell the batteries with the car or lease them seperately -- both options are currently on the table. We look forward to hearing more about the new model in the coming months, especially to find out what markets will be blessed with its presence. Stay tuned.

NOPI Car Show Series events always have lots to look at--customized rides and beautiful women. The series culminates each year in September with the NOPI Nationals in Georgia. Along with the car show, burnouts and drifting competition, there's a bikini contest. Here is a look at some of the contestants from the NOPI Nationals.


NOPI stands for Number One Parts Inc., a company founded in 1966 in Atlanta, and it has evolved from selling just Volkswagen parts into what J.C. Whitney wishes it still was. NOPI is relevant to people with lots of disposable income, who—if they can’t visit one of six NOPI stores in Georgia—seem content to order their lime-green spark plug wires from the company’s website, .

The NOPI Nationals started in 1986, again evolving from a Volkswagen event to the largest sport compact show in the country. It costs $40 for a weekend pass, $25 if you can only handle Saturday or Sunday.

Mercedes Alabama 공장 감산 결정

초일류 고급차 회사도 미국의 질퍽거리는 자동차 시장의 어려운 상황으로 부터 자유롭지 못한 것 같다. Mercedes-Benz는 오늘 알라바마 공장은 8월부터 금년 나머지 기간동안 생산을 줄일 것이라고 발표했다.

"우리는 시장의 수요에 맞추어 금년 말까지 생산 계획을 조정할 것입니다." "이 결정은 우리회사의 경쟁력을 유지하고 장기적으로 지속적인 성공을 위한 것입니다." 라고 대변인 Felysia Gerald 가 말했다. 미국에서 자동차를 생산을 시작한지 11년만에 처음으로 시장여건과 경제환경 때문에 감산하게 된 것이라고 말했다. 제랄드는 전통적인 Thanksgiving과 Christmas 휴가 기간을 연장할 것이라고 했으나 얼마 동안이라고는 밝히지 않았다. 또한 금요일 오후 6시 부터의 야간조는 금년 말까지 없앤다고 말했다.

Mercedes 경영진은 오늘 아침부터 4,000명의 공장 종업원들에게 감산을 통보하기 시작했다.
야간 작업자들에게는 추후 통보될 것이라고 제랄드는 말했다. 알라바마 Vance공장에 부품을 Just-in-time 베이스로 공급하는 부품 공장들도 본 공장의 조정된 생산량에 따라 작업시간을 조정할 것이라고 대변인은 말했다. 

익명을 요구하는 한 소식통은 Mercedes공장은 Labor day, Thanksgiving, Christmas 휴가기간을 전후해서 추가로 5일을 휴무한다고 말했다. 제럴드는 생산 축소로 몇대나 감산될지는 밝히기를 거부했다.

Mercedes의 국내 트럭 판매는 6월에 5,090대로 작년 6월보다 11.9%가 감소했다. 금년 상반 6개월간의 국내 트럭 판매는 33,630대로 전년 동기비 0.2% 증가했다.

작년에 알라바마 공장은 GL-class, M-class SUV와 R-class crossover를 총174,356대를 생산, 전세계에 판매했다.

알라바마 주에 있는 현대자동차 공장에서 SantFe SUV와 Sonata sedan 을 생산하고 있고, 바로 이웃 조지아 주에는 기아자동차 공장이 준공을 눈앞에 두고 있다.

Lamborghini Profit Soars

Despite sour economy, Lamborghini profit soars

Despite the tepid global economy, it appears that rich folks are still buying expensive toys. Automobili Lamborghini's global sales and financial results for the first half of 2008 both hit record highs. Revenues increased 9.6 percent to 277.4 million euros ($434.5 million) from 253.1 million euros. Pretax profit increased to 35 million euros ($54.8 million) from 26.4 million euros, a 32.6 percent increase. By contrast, Lamborghini earned 47.1 million euros ($73.7 million) for all of 2007.

호화스런 생활을 즐기는 돈많은 부호들한테 불경기가 무슨 대수겠는가? 이들에게는 자동차 연비도 배출 가스도 관심꺼리가 안된다. 그저 힘있고 뽀다구 나는 차면 되는 거 아닌가?

Toyota Tops 2007 CAFE Numbers

작년도 미국에서 판매하고 있는 모든 자동차 메이커들의 종함 평균 연료 효율의 통계수치가 발표했다.우승자는 누굴까? Lotus. 그러나 Lotus는 판매대수가 극히 적어 고려대상이 되지 않았고, 여러 차급의 차종을 판매하는 메이커들의 평균 연비를 종합해 발표했다. Toyota는 Honda보다 약간 앞질러 29.69mpg, Honda는  29.49mpg이고, 현대는 29.37mpg 였다.

Prius hybrid가 Toyota의 연효율을 가장 좋게 끌어 올린 것이 분명하다. 놀랄 것도 없는 것은 Detroit 3사의 GM은 25.16mpg, Ford는 25.15mpg, DaimlerChrysler는 꼬래비가 되어 평균연비는 23.97mpg였다. Toyota는 Mileage Crown의 영예를 포기하고 싶은 생각은 없는 것 같다. 일본의 초 거대 자동차 메이커 Toyota는 제3세대 Prius의 생산능력을 70% 씩이나 늘리는 계획으로 일본의 Tsusumi 공장에서 연산 480,000대 생산할 게획이다.
2010년에는 Toyota는  Mississippi plant 로 Prius 공급을 늘리는 계획을 가지고 있다. 지금 보면 Toyota는 Prius는 생산하기만 하면 판매는 저절로 될 것 같은 생각이 든다.
