현대자동차는 LA 모터쇼에서 "Blue is the new green movement" 에 합류했다. 여기서 현대는 "Blue Drive'라는 연비 계획을 발표했다. 계획의 요점은 2015년까지 연방 의무 연비 규정인 CAFE 35mpg를 작년에 수정된 법안의 2020년까지가 아닌 2015년 까지 앞당겨 충족시킨다는 것이다.

현대는 현재 미국에서 Toyota Honda와 같이 CAFE 우수업체의 위치를 수년간 유지해오고 있으며 향후 최우수 메이커의 자리를 점하겠다는 것. 현대는 자체기술로 개발한 Hybrid Drive System을 2010년 Sonata로 데뷰할 목표를 갖고 있다. 이번 LA 모터쇼에서 Sonata hybrid를 볼 수 있을 것으로 기대했는데 새로 디자인된 Sonata에 적용할 Drive system 만을 전시한다.  
Hybrid Blue Drive 는 30kw/151 lb-ft 모터/제너레이터에 6속 자동변속와 접합한다. 아래 3개의 저속 기어는 보통 변속기보다 기어 비율이 커서 낮은 속도에서도 주행할 수 있도록 했다. .

Los Angeles Auto Show에서 처음으로 언베일링하는 차종중에 가장 기대되는 차가 어떤 것인가하고 물었다. 왜냐하면 여기에서 나오는 답이 바로 모터쇼장에 오는 관람객들의 관심 차종이 될 것이기 때문이다. 여러가지 차종에는 플러그-인 전기자동차, 수소연료자동차, 신형 하이브리드등등이 있기 때문이다. 유감스럽게 Hyundai Sonata HybridKia Hydrogen Borrego SUV가 큰 기대를 못받고 있는 것 같은데  ㅠ.ㅠ

Dear Wife:  

I'm writing you this letter to tell you that I'm leaving you for good.  I've been a good man to you for seven years and I have nothing to show for it.  These last two weeks have been hell.  Your boss called to tell me that you had quit your job today and that was the last straw.

Last week, you came home and didn't even notice that I had gotten a new hair cut, cooked your favorite meal and even wore a brand new pair of silk boxers.  You came home and ate in two minutes, and went straight to sleep after watching all of your soaps. 

You don't tell me you love me anymore, you don't want sex anymore or anything.  Either you're cheating on me or you don't love me anymore, whatever the case is, I'm gone.

Your Ex-husband

PS Don't try to find me.  Your  SISTER and I are moving away to West Virginia Together!  Have a great life!

Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter.  It's true that you and I have been married for seven years, although a good man is a far cry from what you've been.  I watch my soaps so much because they drown out your constant whining and griping.  Too bad that doesn't work.

I did notice when you got a hair cut last week, the first thing that came to mind was "You look just like a girl!" but my mother raised me not to say anything if you can't say anything nice. 

And when you cooked my favorite meal, you must have gotten me confused with MY SISTER, because I stopped eating pork seven years ago.

I turned away from you when you had those new silk boxers on because the price tag was still on them.  I prayed that it was a coincidence that my sister had just borrowed fifty dollars from me that morning and your silk boxers were $49.99.

After all of this, I still loved you and felt that we could work it out.   So when I discovered that I had hit the lotto for ten  million dollars, I quit my job and bought us two tickets to Jamaica .   But when I got home you were gone.  Everything happens for a reason I guess.

I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted.  My lawyer said that with your letter that you wrote, you won't get a dime from me.  So take care.

 Hybrid Concept gets early reveal

이번 LA 모터쇼에서 공개하는 Toyota Camry CNG hybrid concept car가 천연개스로 하이브리드 시너지를 결합하는 아이디어를 촉발시켰다. 이번 LA모터쇼에 데뷰하는 이 차는 라디에터 그릴이 없는 후론트엔드로 쉽게 알아볼 수 있다고 한다. 트렁크 스페어타이어를 놓는 공간에 두개의 탱크가 장착된 CNG 연료의 Camry hybrid는 Open Road Blog에 의하면 한번 충전에 250마일 (400km)를 주행할 수 있다고 한다. 거기에 CNG개스는 휘발유보다 배출개스가 적고 게다가 가격도 싸다. 대신에 어려운 점은 CNG통은 원통형이어야  하기 때문에 최선의 장착성을 위한 모양을 포기할 수 밖에 없다. 또한 CNG는 휘발유보다 밀도가 낮으므로 출력이 휘발유만 못하다는 것. CNG 하이브리드 카를 위한 인프라스트럭쳐가 아직은 미흡하다. 전국에 대략 1,000곳 정도의 CNG 충전소가 있다고 도요다가 발표했다. 그래서 도요다는 조만간 생산계획은 없다고.  단지 모터쇼에 Toyota의 환경친화 기술개발 노력의 이미지를 위한 것이라고 한다.

인도네시아 자카르타에 거주하고 있는 지인으로 부터 아래와 같은 이메일에 첨부된 기사를 보내왔다. World Street Journal 에 실린 기사인데, 미국 버락 오바마 대통령 당선자의 한국자동차와 한미 FTQ에 대한 잘 못된 인식을 지적하고 있다. 원문을 그대로 옮겨 놓았다.
한번 읽어 보시기를... 한국사람중에 여기에 반대 의견을 가질 사람은 없을 것이고.. 오바마가 생각을 바꿀지가 궁금하네요. Thaks Steve :)

(Coyner's Comment:  Penske finds a lot of wood on his bat when he points out that even if Korean markets were wider open to American auto imports there would not be a major increase of US car sales here.  Nonetheless, be it a Round 9 of renewed KORUS FTA negotiations or some kind of side agreement, American legislators need to be pacified in their opposition to an FTA that seems to coddle the closed market of a very visible US export to the other country while being asked to come to the rescue of Detroit.

A friend of mine working at GM claimed his company was a world leader in green technology development, but they had not quite yet released the next generation of vehicles.  If such claims are valid, then perhaps the removal of trade barriers to American auto exports to Korea need to be taken more seriously.  If, on the other hand, the claim is overstated, then America may be in a weaker position than what we may assume.)

Few countries seem more worried about Barack Obama's presidency than South Korea.
There's plenty of enthusiasm on the streets of Seoul about a change of leadership in Washington. Yet, Koreans are worried about Obama's plans to bail out Detroit's Big Three auto makers. Obama singled out Korea as an unfair auto trader last month. Newspapers and television programmes here are filled with reports about what the US? largesse means for manufacturers. Case in point: A 7 November article in The Korea Herald headlined: Obama's protectionism weighs on Korea. Koreans, and folks in the rest of Asia, should have little to worry about if Obama and Congress rescue Detroit. To understand why, just ask Jay Leno.
It says much about these times when comedians offer better insights than our elected leaders. Tonight Show host Leno and his ilk are poking fun at an industry that was once the pride and joy of the world's biggest economy. It also says much when folks in Seoul repeat his jokes over a few beers, as many are these days. Henry Ford probably never envisioned US autos becoming a global punchline.

I saw a guy on Hollywood Boulevard say to a hooker. What can I get for an extra 50? She said 100 shares of General Motors? Leno joked last month.

The funny man isn't without some serious arguments. The type of vehicles America makes best are, unfortunately, not the type of vehicles that people really want anymore, Leno, a self-described car nut and collector, wrote in June in Portfolio.com.

Leno added that we live in a world in which young people have grown up on Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota. To lure them to the American brand, you've got to give them something exciting, something bold, something different.

Demands are growing for a bailout because more than three million jobs are tied to Detroit's survival. The US auto industry has become a safety net all its own, much like the zombie companies Japan kept afloat in the 1990s to avoid massive job losses. Even so, the concern is that huge job losses in Detroit will worsen the US recession. Any public-support package is far from a threat to Asia. In fact, it's likely to help Asian competitors. As many auto experts point out, it would be better to let General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Llc. file for bankruptcy were they to run out of cash. Hyundai Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and other Asian auto makers should fear this scenario more than a bailout.

Enabling Detroit

Bankruptcy would force auto makers to get under the hood and address weaknesses, excesses and barriers to becoming more globally competitive. They would emerge leaner, more innovative and a greater threat to Asia.

A bailout takes the onus off executives to change, allowing them to maintain their bad old ways. Any bailout should come with strict agreements on altering business-as-usual in Detroit and demands that top management step down.

The reason most Koreans don't buy American cars has nothing to do with the 8% tariff on imports. Nor do trade barriers keep Japanese from buying American. The quicker US lawmakers own that fact, the quicker they will stop enabling Detroit from moving into the 21st century and become competitive. The popularly mentioned reasons for Detroit's funk a lack of quality products, negligible innovation, dismal fuel efficiency and ignoring consumer preferences' also help explain why Koreans don't buy American cars.

None of this is to say Asian markets are as open as they could be. Japanese, Koreans and Malaysians could do more to make it easier for Detroit to get cars into their nations. That doesn't mean consumers will buy cars that are made more for American streets than Asian ones.

If Detroit had only poured more profits from the sport utility vehicle-sales boom of the 1990s and early 2000s into research and development, it wouldn't be a national disgrace. Congress' protection of the industry, like the Chinese protected uncompetitive banks or the Soviets coddled inefficient factories, hasn't served the US economy.

Obama's pre-election rhetoric continues to worry Koreans. They've been waiting for passage of a free-trade agreement with the US. Obama has pointed out that the US imported about 770,000 Korean vehicles last year versus about 5,000 American vehicles in Korea.

Perpetuating complacency

A caveat worth noting here, says Korea's ambassador to the US Lee Tae Sik, is that at least 200,000 of those cars were made in Alabama. Meanwhile, Hyundai is busily building the hybrid cars Detroit says it can't afford to.

What a difference a decade makes. In the late 1990s, US officials helped bail out a Korean economy in chaos. Back then, many Americans still rolled their eyes at the idea of buying Korean cars. And yet, Koreans are passing Americans by. No one is saying US auto makers have it easy as global growth slides. Japan's economy, for example, is now officially in recession. Detroit's labour union agreements and pension liabilities pose daunting challenges.

This is hardly a new problem. Who can forget former US president George Bush's humiliating trip to Tokyo in 1992? His goal was to get Japan to increase US car imports.
Now, it's Korea's turn. Detroit's problem also isn't the sliding value of the dollar. It's that in 2008, after years of losing market share, the US still makes cars Asians don't want. The best situation for Korea would be the US perpetuating that complacency.

해외 트레팅을 할 때마다 느낀 일이다. 작년 네개 나라의 유명산을 오르면서 느낀 것은 등산로에 사람들이 버린 쓰레기가 없었다 것이다.  담배꽁초나 쓰고 버린 휴지, 과일 껍질 같은 것도 볼 수가 없다. 깨끗했다. 공원입구에 들어서면 상점이라고는 눈씻고 봐도 없다. 관광안내 사무실 뿐이였다. 공원안을 관리를 잘하기 때문이다. 상점 영업을 허락하지 않기 때문이다.

우리나라 국립공원은 가관이다. 계곡에 자리가 좋다고 생각되는 곳에는 여지 없이 돗자리를 깔고 영업을 하고 있다. 술 장사다. 공원 안팍 모두 등산로 양쪽에 주점, 식당, 일반상점들이 줄지어 자리잡고 호객행위를 하고 있다. 이런 상점들 때문에 계곡물은 오염되고 있다. 음식물 쓰레기와 설거지 물이 계곡으로 흘러 들어오기 때문이다.  지금 우리정부에서는 왜 이런 것을 방치하고 있는지?

오래만에 산행 정규멤버가 다 모였다. 불광동 대호아파트 뒷편에서 시작, 쪽두리봉, 비봉, 사모바위를 뒤로 응봉능선을 타고 삼천탐방 안내소까지 짧지 않은 산행이 되었다.
As Alan Kim returned from his overseas trip all of three members joined for hiking again since the last hike in October 6.

쪽두리봉을 지나 향로봉. 변함없이 꿋꿋이 버티고 서 있다. 이곳은 사고 다발 지역이지만 다행이 사고보도 안내판에 금년에는 인명사고는 없었던 듯 하다.

나는 북한산을 많이 좋아한다. 그 동안 북한산의 봉우리들은 거의 다 올라가 보았지만 아직도 가보지 않은 코스는 얼마나 많을까?

지난 2월 히말라야 동행 트레킹을 계기로 월요일 마다 산행을 즐기고 있다. 이번 달에 히말라야에 다시 같이 가기로 약속했었지만 부득이한 이상일사장의 사정으로 미루고 있는 중이다.
내년초에는 출동할 수 있게되기를 바랄뿐

Stan and I are enoying Monday hiking since our Himalayan trekking in February this year.
I'm hopeful about our plan will be reallized early next year.

오늘 예정된 코스는 봉우리 넘어 봉우리를 연속으로 넘어가는 코스다. 원효봉에서 본 바로 앞 비봉과 멀리 보이는 문수봉, 더 멀리 왼쪽으로 백운대와 만경대.

비봉은 봉우리 정상에 비석이 있다고 해서 주어진 이름이다. 신라의 징흥황순수비가 있다. 사진은 복제 비석.

Bibong means a peak of monument. The original one was put up at the top of the peak about 1,450 years ago during Shilla dynasty which is now  kept in the Nat'l Museum.

대부분 암능을 타는 길이였는데 하산길에 이런 낙엽을 밟는 기분은 힘들었던 산행에 대한 보상 같기도..  낙엽 밟히는 소리가 사삭사삭 한다.

숨은벽 바위에서 혹은 백운대에서 밤골로 내려오는 계곡길에 이런 작은 소가 있다. 십여미터의 낮은 절벽위에 자리 잡은 바위위에 고힌 물이다.

이 작은 소(沼)에서 흘러 내리는 물줄기. 여름 우기 같으면 물이 제법 콸콸 폭포같이 흘러 내리겠지만 지금은 가을 가뭄에 계곡의 물도 말랐다. 병아리 오줌 같지 졸졸 흘러 내리는 게 오히려 귀엽다.

가을 가믐이 심각한 것 같다.

낙엽 밟는 기분은 봄 여름에는 느낄 수 없는 묘한 느낌을 준다.

계절이 바뀌고, 한해가 저물어 간다는 것을 실감하면서 지난 일들을 생각하게 한다.  
낙엽 밟히는 소리를 들으면서.

낙엽을 밟을 때 나는 소리와 먼지가 섞인 낙엽 부서지는 냄새는  
도시에서 코끝에 익은 매연 냄새와 다르다. 상큼한 공기 냄새를 느껴진다.

가을이 깊어간다.
조금 있으면 추운 겨울에 눈 덮힌 산길을  오르고 있겠지.
