The memories of Hyundai Motor Holland located at Middenweg 7, Leidschendam, Holland. Mr. Peter Komijn, ex-HMH colleague sent me these invaluable pictures. Thanks million Peter.
As the image size of the photos are so big that I can't show all picture at a time, I will be rotating the photos week after week.

The former-executives of Kia Int'l business div. gathered today to give a good wish to Kevin Chung who has recently been appointed managing director of Hyundai/Kia distributor in Laos. Kevin will be leaving Seoul on this Sunday for Laos. He worked for me in 1984 when I was in charge of organizing the World Hyundai Distributors Conference for the first time in HMC history and he did a good job as a staff of mine. Before he left Kia one and a half year ago he was the head of Kia Middle-East region office in Dubai, UAE. He used work at HMC for almost twenty years befor Kia.

We gave a farewell party to Kevin Chung. We wish you a success with Hyundai and Kia in Laos, Kevin. God bless you all. Cheers!!!

I was waiting for my turn for the doctor at Ilsan General Hospital to consult the result of general check-ups when my cell phone was ringing. When I took the phone I could instantly recognize the voice of the other side. He was a man I have known for years who has a great personality.

As I had been engaged in export business during the past three decades, I had chances to make friends with many good people and still I keep in touch with some of them though many of them now remain only in my memories or are forgotten.

With Abdullah I was keeping a good relationship. But all of sudden his emailing stopped and I have not been able to hear from him since last year or so. Now he came to Seoul, Korea on his business last Thursday and called me. We met at the InterContinental hotel and chatted for about two hours. Once again I thank Abdullah for his time shared with me out of his busy schedule. I appreciate his never-changing friendship. Please visit my blog more often Abdullah, then you'll see what I'm doing and what I'm thinking. Shukran !

Mr. Jack Wang once who was a Hyundai distributor in Taiwan from the beginning stage of Hyundai's exploring overseas markets with its own model PONY but now a billionair in Taiwan and worldwide visited Seoul, Korea on a business trip. Jack is at present engaged in various business such as manufacturing, real estate business and IPP (independent power plant) business. He was kind enough to share some time with old friends of HMC. He and I have known each other for over 30 years though he is no more involved in distributorship for Hyundai Motor in Taiwan.

Mr. Joongsung Kim recently wrote a reminiscence. I have read and I was impressed by the stories in the book.

Hello from Tokyo‏;

This is a letter from Mr. Hara who was a manager of Mitsubishi Motors Parts Division and my
counter part. He often visited Korea on business trip to Hyundai Motor's parts Division. He
retired from Mitsubishi years ago and is enjoying his retirement life on his own way which is
good. Following is a letter from him.

Dear Mr. Mark Juhn,
Thank you very much for your message.
I enjoyed your photos of Hakkoda-san where is famous for the heavy snow. It was very lucky for you to have returned safely from the trip there. I have never been there, therefore you now know more than I know about the area.

I am enjoying my retired life doing a lot of things.
One of the recent work is a miniature town scaled to 1/220 and built in the glass top table.
1/220 scale model trains appeared in the musical"Star Light Express" named "Rusty", are planned to run around the town.

This is a letter from my old Dutch colleague who was PR manager at HMH in 1978 and 1980. The stories below would be good to recall my forgotten memories of the days in Leidschendam to be included in my book.

Dear Mr. Juhn (Juhn-si?)
I hope you are not in a hurry with collecting memories from the Leidschendam period. I moved house last year and have started to sort out the pictures referring to Hyundai. As said, there are hundreds of them. The scanned pictures do not give a good impression of the quality. They are perfect b/w negatives and prints.
It would be nice to have my Hyundai story 1978-1991 ready this year as Hyundai is now 30 years in the Netherlands. First introduction of Hyundai to the European market was in Belgian during the Brussels Motor Show of January 1979, followed the next month by the introduction to the Dutch market during the Amsterdam RAI Show of 1979. This was a great event with plenty of TV coverage, thanks to a Miss Lee, top model flown in from Korea, and Suky who would become Peter Komijn's wife. So Hyundai could celebrate 30 years on the Dutch market next year.
Apart from Jan Mol, Peter Komijn is somebody I meet from time tot time as we are both long-standing M.G. Car Club members (I since 1957 and Peter since 1979). He is a prominent man in the automotive trade - technical director of the Mazda distributor, part of the Autobinck Holding who also owns Greenib Car since 2000. He is married to a Korean wife Suky (Soo-kjong?).
Jonet I met a few years ago at Autodata, also quite prominent in the Dutch automotive trade with CEO Wil Brouwers who was responsible for the computerisation of Greenib Car in the Eighties. He introduced me to computers in my small operation as well, with the first Hyundai PC imported in the Netherlands, in 1987.
The rest of the names you mention, Hartog, Seegers, Ed van Daalen and Jongejan have disappeared out of my sight. One important man I have not been able to contact yet - he has been seriously ill - is Wim Harmsen who arranged the European homologation of new Hyundai models. As far as I know the European homologation is still arranged from Holland as a continuation of Wim Harmsen's pioneering activity.
Please excuse me for being able to spare little time on research in my own material and from those I could interview. It would be interesting to learn your views on the development of Hyundai's European market from the Leidschendam days. Lee, Soo-Chun told me on Saturday mornings about what he had done to get the Pony project off the ground. Most impressive. I heard he died of a heart attach in the Eighties. He taught me almost everything I know about the teamwork between Europeans and Koreans. On the same Saturday mornings I was taught the fundamentals of Han-gul. I kept all the documents of those lessons. They were indispensable in my PR work explaining the Korean background. At the time South-Korea was only known for the Korean War (in which also a Dutch contingent fought the North-Koreans), Ginseng and orphans adopted by Dutch couples. The literacy, rebuilding the cultural heritage after the Japanese occupation and the determination to become an industrial power, were elements which figured in my texts and articles written in the period of my functioning for HMH and later Greenib Car.
Summarising: My work for Hyundai has been an important stage both in my business career and my personal life.
Let's keep in touch.
Best regards,
Pim van der Veer
P.S,
Are you the third person from the left on the picture with the first parts shipment on 1 December 1978?

Also a picture of Lee, Soo-Chun in the Leidschendam showroom.

Dear Mark,
First of all , thank you for your time and CONGRATULATIONS!
You are doing a tremendous job at HMC.
I am a little peanut to analyse, but all contact we had in the past left me the impressions of your way of thinking, how to have the things done and your respect to others.
I feel proud about you and your career and mainly because I had the opportunity to have a good and close contact with you during the project in Brazil.
I still remember your last words to me at Guarulhos Airport: " You'll have good fruits, Eduardo". Yes, I have learned a lot during that time, been in touch with you and all colleagues of HMC.
Unfortunately things happen and the business as bankrupted. Reginaldo, no news.

Many times I remember a lot of moments and the people of HMC  : Mr Baik, Kevin Chung( he sings pretty good in the Karaoke), SK Lee, S. Hur, Yoon, Hong(Kenny- always friendly and helpful person), Mr Park and Lee ( Ulsan Plant) Mr Park was president , wasn't he?
Joana of the Ceremonial Ulsan Plant that kindly helped me a lot in 97 when I had the facial nerve paralysis during the trip. (that were very tough days!!) Bottom line, very good moments and learning, at all . Please say my best regards to them.

After all I visited Korea 10 times, I have a lot of good things to remember! Once a month Luci and I go to Korean restaurant in Aclimação( You were there) or in Bom Retiro quarter do have a Kalbi, Kimtshi, bulgogii and drink soju. She loves Korean food. Tipshida!!!
You are perfectly right about 100 degree, 10% more faster & better, let's praise; all campaign brings good will, honor and the sense of participation, recognition and importance. Makes positive and proud day. So, luck happens! I was lucky been in touch with you.

At VW Brasil, Dr Sauer introduced a campaign called "Proposal Plan" to improve everything.
The motto was: "One proposal per employee per year". VW had about 40.000 heads that time.VW had a matrix to find a score in accordance with position and responsibility. Lower the position and responsibility involved, bigger the bonus. My group received the first place in volume of proposals (11,4 per head/year) and second place in value (US$ 5 millions saving) .
End 1999, I started as General Manager at Kautex Textron 100km far from SP, blowing fuel tanks, ducts and reservoirs for OEMs. I introduced the " Proposal Plan Campaign" with a very simple motto: One proposal, one blue cap. It was fantastic, after three months almost everybody (150 employees) was using a blue cap and showing many others over their tables and we collected about 600 proposals. Many people  start receiving praises and little bonus due to the size of the company, but all corners were clean, little things done, shoe shinning, no nuts on the floor, people talking positively; it was great!
You are right about the ambulance. Let's fix small things and the big will be bigger.
This year only Kautex Brasil received ISO 14000 Certification with honor, among 25 plants worldwide. I left the company beginning 2001. From beginning 2002 up to last November we had a small company in Sao Paulo taking care about cars .Cleaning, polishing, renewing. Very simple job, many things to do, many people to talk and a lot of problems to solve. We were alone doing the business, Luci my wife and my right arm and me. So, after 6 years without holidays, somebody made an offer and we decided to sell the business..
Now we are at home looking to the garden, listening to the birds and writing to you.

How did  I find your blog?
Now I can be a little bit more cyman. Time that I didn't have treating cars.
Some weeks ago I submitted my resume to SPX, an American Company. They are looking for a General Manager for a branch in Sao Paulo.
Looking to SPX's site I wondered about many special tools and equipments they supply HYUNDAI. The HM ALABAMA is a nice plant. I saw the movies. And so I start thinking about you and trying to find you and I found !!!  Was great!!  Suddenly you appear smiling!!!
You look like great and healthy. "No white hair".
What a nice trekking in Kinabalu." What about the legs nowadays?
Your son (Joon?) worries about , but I am sure he is proud about his Dad.
The road in Bolivia is unbelievable. Thank you for sharing your experience and your way of thinking with the world so I could meet you again. I hope many executives (not only) start reading your experience.
I'd say thanks God (any God you know) or thanks Bill Gates?

I hope everything is fine with you and you family,  have a nice day.

Our best regards,

Eduardo
Sorry to waste your time but for me this is so valuable moment.

The phot below was take in December 1978 when Hyundai Women Valley Ball Team came to Holland for goodwill games with some of the local teams. There are some Koreans in the spectators you may reognize. Mr. MB Lee and Amb. Yeon are seen among the Koreans. If you look closely check the faces in the photos by enlagre it you may find me also who has a long wave hair style.
