OK, so if you were wondering what could be gained by schlepping a batch of Tesla Roadsters across the pond, I have your answer: convincing European automotive journalists that EVs are wicked cool.

Take, for example, the feelings of Guido Reinking, the editor of Automobilwoche. Before feeling what it's like to be behind the wheel of a Roadster recently, he thought that EVs offered a pathetic future and that electric-powered vehicles were more suited for public transportation than cars. Of EVs, he said, "Aren't they completely sterile, bereft of any emotion, just another
appliance?"

He's changed his tune. According to his piece in
Automotive News Europe, Reinking now says that, "Anyone harboring such misconceptions needs to take a test drive in a Tesla Roadster." It's a feeling we know, and know well.

Sure, Reinking noted the Roadster's problems, as we noted last week, but I thought the change of mind that Reinking had should be brought up on its own. After all, everyone is going to have their first experience with EVs in the coming decade (give or take) and the more positive those can be, the better the chances will be for battery-powered vehicles.

An electric car can be fun to drive

I have to admit that I don't find it appealing to consider a future in which we'll all be driving electric cars.

I don't have anything against using electrically powered public transportation, and I do so regularly. But an electric car? Aren't they completely sterile, bereft of any emotion, just another appliance?

Anyone harboring such misconceptions needs to take a test drive in a Tesla Roadster.

The all-electric sports car, which based on the Lotus Elise, boasts acceleration on a par with a Ferrari. Tesla says its 225-kilowatt (302 hp) electric motor propels it from 0 to 100 kilometers an hour, or 62.5 mph, in 3.9 seconds.

On a company-sponsored test drive in Munich, the car offered the emotional, heart-pounding ride of a street racer. Unfortunately, the drive also illustrated the car's technical weaknesses.

Of the three test cars offered at the Tesla presentation, one did not start. Another, after a fairly short drive on the freeway, emitted smoke from the battery compartment in the rear, where 7,000 lithium ion batteries are bound together.

Although lithium ion batteries offer superior range and performance to nickel-metal hydride or lead-acid ones, they are complex, expensive and somewhat prone to fires.

When the Tesla functioned, it functioned well. But as the glitches demonstrated, it hardly seems suited to volume production at this time.

In the future, major technological advances in the automobile will continue to come from large auto companies and suppliers, and not from small high-tech firms in California.

Developing and building a car requires thousands of experts and huge investment. It's totally different from writing a new computer program or designing a mobile phone with a camera or an MP3 player.

Suppliers such as Robert Bosch, Continental and Johnson Controls-Saft are investing hundreds of millions of euros to develop electric-drive systems built around lithium ion batteries. Next year, Mercedes-Benz will begin selling a hybrid S class powered by Continental's battery pack.

This kind of vehicle will make up an interesting market niche in the next 20 years.

The electric car is just one of many building blocks in the future of the auto industry, but it is one with which you can have fun.

Tesla Roadster

A host of new electric models is on the way, including a saloon.

Tesla Motors’ next vehicle, codenamed Whitestar, will go into production in 2010 and offer mid-range practicality aimed at families, in direct contrast to the niche all-electric Tesla Roadster the company has made its name with.

The new car will be built in California, not New Mexico as previously planned, and will be a high-volume product. According to Telsa CEO Ze'ev Drori, the car's styling is nearly finished and the firm is now designing the factory.

Tesla is also planning a ‘range extender’ version of the Whitestar to rival the Chevrolet Volt, which will use a small petrol engine to charge a battery pack and drive an electric motor.

The firm then wants to continue to bring down the price of electric cars and plans to launch a cheaper, entry-level model codenamed Bluestar.

The Tesla Roadster electric sports car won't go on sale in Europe until the fall of 2009 (for a hefty price of about $160,000). But at least one early version has found its way across the Atlantic: Bentley, which specializes in heavyweight luxury cars, has one of the light electric runabouts.

The aluminum roadster, with 6,831 laptop batteries jammed into its rear section, has been tested by Bentley CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen and development chief Ulrich Eichhorn. Says Eichhorn: "Not as hot as a Lotus, but absolutely a great driving experience." Lotus delivers the Tesla chassis.

But don't look for an electric Bentley; the required batteries would be too heavy. And Bentleys would have to shrink.

There's lots of green-car action taking place at this years British International Motor Show (BIMS) and although we can't be there in person, our vlogger pal Danny is. Today, Danny has a fresh interview with Darryl Siry from Tesla who was at the show to check out the Lightning GT reveal accompany a Roadster while it sits on display for the public to longingly cast their eyes upon. Mr. Siry was forthcoming in answering most of his queries and we were able to glean a few interesting bits of Tesla news.

The most important information was about the state of European Roadster sales. Although he wouldn't give an exact figure, Danny did manage to wrest from the marketing VP that they've sold several dozen, in fact, they are "pretty soon going to close in on a hundred". They expect to sell the entire European allotment of 250 units for 2008 before the end of the year. Another eyebrow raiser was the mention of plans for Euro stores, including one on the outskirts of London, possibly in the direction of Surrey. They go on to discuss other things such as the Model S deployment strategy, batteries and the Roadster drivetrain 1.5. If you're in need of a Tesla fix with a British accent, hit the jump.

WASHINGTON -- The latest government fuel economy report says 2008-model cars and trucks sold in the United States will average 26.8 mpg, up only slightly from 26.6 mpg in 2007.

But one eye-popping number appears in the report: Tesla Motors, the upstart maker of an electric sports car, gets a 2008 corporate average fuel economy rating of 244 mpg. The federal CAFE standard for cars is 27.5 mpg.

The figures show government may have more work to do to compare fairly the energy and environmental impact of electric vehicles with those that use gasoline. But Tesla's CAFE number is more than a curiosity. It could mean cash.

Tesla Vice President Darryl Siry told Automotive News today the company is eager to sell its CAFE credits when trading begins. "It's all upside for us," he said.

The "Electric Vehicle Village" at the British International Motor Show is getting another sports car to keep the Tesla Roadster, also to be on display, from completely hogging the electric-car limelight. The British designed and built Lightning GT will get its world-wide debut at the show which begins on the 23rd of July. Previously we've only been privy to renderings such as the one above and those in the gallery below and are looking forward to seeing what customers will be getting for their £120,000 ($237,716.55) investment.

Though no names were mentioned, it has been disclosed that "lots of people" including several celebrities have already coughed up the £15,000 ($29,716.42) deposit to go to the front of the queue. We would hazard a guess that Top Gear presenter and electric car non-aficionado, Jeremy Clarkson, is not one of those celebrities despite the fact that, with a claimed 0 to 60 time of 4 seconds and a 130 mph top speed, it is no G-Wiz.

Tax breaks for Tesla, Model S sedan to get 225 miles, cost $60k

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger took to the podium today at Tesla's San Carlos, California facility to formally announce a new set of incentives for EV manufacturers to call Cali home. The crux of the address centered on the new CAEATFA program, approved last Wednesday, that exempts automakers from paying sales and use tax on manufacturing equipment used to build EVs. The program is expected to save automakers – and Tesla specifically – millions of dollars, and is largely in response to Tesla's original plan to produce its new sedan in New Mexico.

Tesla used the Governor's visit as an opportunity to formally announce its new "multi-use sport sedan," currently codenamed Model S, which is estimated to get 225 miles on a single charge and to cost around $60,000. However, Tesla did not announce when the sedan would go on sale, nor would it give any indication about where the new EV would be produced.

For the last couple of months there has been an ongoing discussion on various sites (including our own) about the status of Martin Eberhard's Tesla Roadster. For those just now tuning in to this little saga, Eberhard was the co-Founder of Tesla Motors, and was supposed to get production car #2 but at least three other cars have now been delivered ahead of his car. Since we last discussed the topic several weeks ago, things have been pretty quiet on this front, but we now have some new information.

During a recent call with Tesla Marketing VP Darryl Siry, I asked about the status of Eberhard's car, given that at least two and perhaps three other cars have now been delivered. It turns out that the car is here in the U.S. and was due to be delivered to Eberhard several weeks ago. Unfortunately, on the appointed day while a technician was doing a final checkout drive to make sure everything was working properly, there was an accident and the back front end of the car sustained significant damage. Continue after the jump for more.
