Toyota Motor Corp. plans to show a compressed-natural-gas Camry Hybrid concept at the Los Angeles auto show in November.
"This is meant to be a signal that there are way more upsides than downsides to natural gas right now," spokesman John Hanson said. "We are now including CNG into our advanced r&d program."
The new concept marks a return to the natural-gas competition for Toyota, which sold a CNG-powered four-cylinder Camry to fleet customers in California in 1999. That experiment was discontinued after a year, as a scarcity of refueling stations limited market appeal.
Toyota estimates that there are only about 1,000 CNG refueling stations nationwide, with fewer than half open to the public.
In recent years, the nonfleet market for CNG vehicles in the United States has been left to Honda Motor Co., which sells the CNG-powered Civic GX and a home refueling appliance that connects to residential gas lines.
Fuel economy ratings for natural gas are calculated in "gallon equivalents" to gasoline, and on this score CNG comes out way ahead. Using the current benchmark for residential natural gas, a gallon equivalent would today cost about $2.25.
Promoters of CNG vehicles also tout the vehicles as relatively clean burning and fuel sipping. The 2009 Honda Civic GX, equipped with the 5-speed automatic transmission, has an EPA mileage estimate of 24 mpg in the city, and 38 mpg on the highway. The Energy Department calculates that CNG vehicles produce 60-90 percent less smog-producing pollutants and 30-40 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Production of natural gas is on the upswing. In the first quarter, production was up 9 percent compared with the year-earlier quarter, according to the Energy Information Administration.
